BIRDWATCHING

Watching birds is a popular hobby in the world. There may be various purposes of watching birds. Watching birds which starts as a hobby, becomes an important cause of conservation through the best way of research and livelihood etc. The best time to watch birds is morning and evening hours. Most of the bird activities take place at this time. Watching birds can be started from around the house and proceeded in any area like water body, forest area, field, grassland, mountain or any specific area for flagship species. While going for watching birds, one must wear loose and comfortable clothes matching with the colours of nature, hat or cap to protect from the sun and shoes to prevent from thorny path or insect bites. For a successful activity of watching birds, a standard field guide, notebook, pen and a standard pair of binoculars are required. Generally, binoculars of 7×35,8×40, or 10×50 capacity are suitable for watching birds. While watching birds, their physical characteristics should be minutely observed and matched with the field guide. As well as their dentification, number, behaviour etc. should be written in the notebook.

   

BIRDWATCHING HOTSPOTS OF BHOPAL

The area of ​​Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is approximately 2772 sq km. Due to its many natural and artificial lakes, it is also called the city of lakes. This is why it is included among the major green cities of India. Due to its natural wealth, more than 300 bird species have been identified here, which include many globally endangered and rare species.

   

VAN VIHAR NATIONAL PARK

 

Van Vihar National Park situated in the midst of Bhopal city acquired 445 hectares area with also designated as a zoo and rescue centre of Central India. Due to located at the bank of Bhoj wetland (Ramsar site) it is blessed with rich avian diversity of 266 species including 100 migratory species which come from Siberia, Russia, middle Asia, Europe and Himalaya. This is also a breeding and nesting ground of various species whereas large flocks of birds feeding and nesting here as little cormorant, large cormorant, Darter, Painted Stork, Red crested pochard common pochard, Eurasian coot etc.

   
   

BHOJ WETLAND

 

This is a prominent and historical wetland of Bhopal formed in the 11th century by Raja bhoj and designated with Ramsar site, IBA(Important Bird Area),and the Asia's biggest man made Lake spread over 31 sq.km. Along with various international recognition it is rich in avian diversity of about 250 bird species including rare, endangered and migratory species found   here in thousands of numbers such as Red crested pochard, Eurasian wigeon, pintail, Whistling teal etc. Vulnerable species like saras crane found here in about 350 number and more than 50,000 bird population has been counted every year in this wetland.

   
   

KERWA DAM

 

Kerwa Dam constructed on Kerwa  river near Bhopal to supply water to BHEL City acquired 34.5 sq.km. spread area and surrounded with light forest of Teak and other deciduous vegetation. About 100 species of aquatic and terrestrial bird  species found here. A large number of ducks and waders species such as Ruddy shelduck, Spot billed duck, Pintail, Painted stork, open Bill stork, woolly necked stork etc are found here in good numbers. The forest of this area is also a home of some rare, predatory and nocturnal bird species as Crested serpent eagle, jungle owlet, Mottled wood owl, Savanna nightjar, Indian nightjar etc.

Dr. Sangeeta Rajgir

She is the founder of Bhopal Birds Organisation and State Coordinator of Indian Bird Conservation Network of Madhya Pradesh. She completed her Ph.D (Zoology) in year 2009, Titled “ Studies on avian biodiversity and habitat correlation in managed and unmanaged ecosystem of Van Vihar National Park, Catchment in Bhopal (M.P)”.Her research work on avian diversity got published in more than 60 national and international journals and magazine. Other than Madhya Pradesh she is also done research work on avian diversity of Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand and photograph more than 400 bird species across India.

She is the main author of the first Hindi field guide on birds titled “Bhopal ki pramukh pakshi prajatiyan” and “Field guide to rare birds of Bhopal” published by Bhopal Birds organisation with collaboration of Madhya Pradesh State Biodiversity Board.

He is the founder of Bhopal Birds Organsation and principal investigator of Artificial nesting project in Chhattisgarh. After master’s degree he completed his course on biodiversity conservation from BNHS. He is the resource person of many government and non-government organisations in Madhya Pradesh. Presently he is doing his research project on avian diversity and lepidoptera in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand. In Bhopal he organised many bird counts, birdwatching and nature camps.

He is the co-author of the first Hindi field guide on birds titled “Bhopal ki pramukh pakshi prajatiyan” and “Field guide to rare birds of Bhopal” published by Bhopal Birds organisation with collaboration of Madhya Pradesh State Biodiversity Board.
